Scientists at the University Hospital in Galway, Ireland, analyzed the problem of diabetic retinopathy in women who give birth after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
This study found that of the 307 pregnant women who had been diagnosed with diabetes before pregnancy, 60% were more prone to diabetic retinopathy.
The level of HbA1c normally increases during the second 3 months of pregnancy and is going down during the last three months.
Mothers with a greater drop in HbA1c levels were more than twice as likely to suffer from worsening diabetic retinopathy.
From the above results, it was possible to conclude that the worsening of diabetic retinopathy is more common during pregnancy, and ocular exams should be performed, especially in women at high risk.
Retinopathy in type 2 diabetes can be a complication that is too serious. These diabetics should:
- Control primary disease,
- Avoid tobacco, and
- Maintain cholesterol and blood pressure within normal limits.
In retinopathy, the blood vessels that are in the retina, in the part of the eye where the light forms the image, grow branches that can drip blood right in the center of the eye, causing a blurred vision.
A very high pressure is capable of causing damage to the optic nerve, resulting in loss of vision. Scar tissue by the growth of new blood vessels, can cause the retina to detach.

- Blurry vision,
- Vision that comes and goes,
- Difficulty seeing the color,
- Loss of vision.
